downloading Unpacking The Plug in:

Once you have purchased RevMax and downloaded it from the link in your payment email, rename the file RevMax-Package or similar as to easily identify the plugin later, then using any zip utility, unzip the package to a location that is easy to locate on your local machine. Once unzipped you will have a folder named “RevMax-Package” or the above chosen name, inside this folder you will find two more zip files, one named clients and one named RevMax.zip. (purchase)

Uploading Installing The RevMax Plugin

Using any ftp program or shell you can transfer the clinets.zip folder to your OpenX install path and unzip it there or unzip clients.zip on your local machine and upload. if your OpenX install is similar to mydomain.com/openx/ then the clients folder will be located at mydomain.com/openx/clients/. While there you may want to check the file and folder permissions and set folders 775 and files 644, or similar depending on your servers configuration.

Now log into your OpenX installation and switch to the administrator account, now switch to the plugins page.

Click the browse button and browse to the “RevMax-Package” folder on your local machine and find the file named RevMax.zip click on it then click install. RevMax 4plugin will then be installed on your server and you will now see a new tab, while logged in as admin, named RevMax.

Switching to RevMax Plugin within OpenX

By clicking on the newly presented RevMax plugin tab the OpenX admin is taken first to the RevMax updates page. This page originates from btdsoft.com as a feed and will keep you informed as to the expansion and further development of RevMax. To limit the load on your resources this page is now cached on your server for seven days before it is loaded again from ours. If the feed is ever in error the page will simply provide a link back to the updates page at btdsoft.com. No RevMax pages either request information from your servers nor send any information to ours. (purchase)

RevMax Ad Packages OverView

By clicking the Ad Packages button to the left you are presented with a page where you can create, edit and view created ad packages. Once a ad package is created it will show here and depending on settings, in other areas.

ad-packages-overview

Creating Ad Packages within RevMax

By clicking the “ad package” link you are presented with a page to set up and configure your first ad package. The ad package defines what you are entitling the purchasing advertiser to, which can be as specific as 1 week leaderboard rotation on a single page or 100000 adviews across a network of sites.<br /

ad-package-top

Configuring The Ad Package.

You must first have some idea as to what type of advertising package you would like to sell or ad space you would like to rent.
Lets go over the settings.
a) Selling: Would you like to sell Ad Views (cpm), Ad Clicks (cpc), or rent a tenancy ? Select accordingly from the drop down list.
b)Subscription Billing Cycle:If subscription has been selected above this defines the billing cycle of this particular ad package, if renting for 1 week then set to 1 or 3 months set to 3 and likewise.
c)Subscription Billing Unit:If subscription has been selected above this defines the billing unit of this particular ad package, if renting for 1 week then set to W or 3 months set to M and Y being year(s) .
d) Package Description: This will be shown on the drop down select list on the advertisers signup screen if made public later in settings. If you are selling 10,000 adviews as a leader board on domain.com then enter in something like 10,000 LeaderBoard Adviews at domain.com.
This field combined with the later discussed “make public” field is handy for creating ad packages across a network of sites.
e) Duration: Enter in here the amount of ad views, ad clicks or the actual time as in subscription. Example if selling 10,000 ad views enter 10000 notice no comma. If selling a subscription simply enter UNLIMITED, or 30 days etc.
f) Cost: Enter in here the amount you would like to collect using paypal for this ad package. Enter numbers like 100.00, do not enter in $ or other signs like “,”.
g) Auto Zone ID: Select one or more zones here from the list, that you would like to link an advertiser campaign to a specific publishers zone within OpenX. The iframe list the the zone description you have entered when creating the zone within OpenX. Check which zone or zones you would like the advertisers campaign linked to. This feature is extremely useful when selling ad space across a network of sites. For instance a package for domainb.com’s leader board can be easily linked here.

ad-packages-bottom

h) Auto Zone: Select yes or no to allow advertisers banner to be automatically attached to a specific, or multiple zones selected above. This is useful if you are renting a spot 160X600 on the index page and you have a zone created within openx for this. Create a package named 160X600 skyscraper etc, and link the package to this zone. the advertiser will not be able to show a banner unless it meets the zone requirements (160X600), as he has no permissions within OpenX to link banners to another zone.

i)Companion Positioning:
Select on to enable companion positioning in campaign.

j) Priority Level: You can choose to set a higher priority for paid campaigns here,a priority of 5 will create a contract campaign and limit the adviews. Keep in mind that high priority campaigns will override any lower level campaigns that may already be active. A high setting number here may deactivate lower priority existing campaigns, once the advertiser or you have added a banner to the campaign.

j) Weight: If you chose to leave the priority setting at the default of “0″ above you can enter in a higher weight here if necessary, a weight of 5 will create a remnant campaign with no daily limit. For example if your “house” campaigns are at a weight of 1 then a setting of 2 here will give this advertisers campaign a higher weight and more exposure, yet the house campaigns will still receive exposure.

k) Make Package Public: Here you can decide if you would like the created package to be shown on the advertisers sign up screen if using the included sign up form.

This may be used in a number of ways. example a: If you are selling ad space on domain b and you do not wish the package available on domain a then set to no. you can then create a link to another sign up page for this specific package. simply go to the existing sign up form, view source , save as filename.html, and edit the available packages list to include the desired package description and package id number. You can then use this form to post to domaina.com/clients/clients.php and the user will be forwarded directly to paypal for payment.
You may also create a totally custom form or button for this package, as long as all the required information is passed to clients.php . If you do not desire all the information, then simply include null values in hidden fields within your new form. Be aware that all information gathered by clients.php is used within OpenX. Example: If you decided not to use clients domain url. The url is set as the campaign name within OpenX by RevMax so you would then have campaigns named “NULL”.

l)Available for reorder:
Select yes if you would like the ad package available on the advertisers > Resources> reorder screen within the clients area. This is available to sell existing clients more adviews, or adclicks, on existing campaigns. It is advisable to create 1 adviews reorder package and 1 adclicks reorder package to be shown on the clients screen.

Discount Coupons

Clicking the Discount Coupons link on the left RevMax menu opens the coupons overview page. Here you can add new discount coupons, edit or delet e existing coupons. Discounts are expressed as a percentage of 100 so .10 would be 10% off .20 would be 20% off and so on.

From the RevMax group you can click on Ad Packages to the left, then click add package. Here you will see all the available RevMax ad package sign up settings.

OpenX Contract Campaigns

When dealing with a contract campaign, you must set a priority level, and a daily impression limit. RevMax uses the subscription specific values here to determine how many ads to limit the advertiser to. As seen in the image, we have set the subscription values to 1(1) week(2).

Now you have to decide how many impressions, the ad package will have (3), here we have set it to 100,000 impressions. With that information, RevMax can now calculate that in a seven day period it must show 14286 impressions daily to meet its goal, over the 7 day period.

After you have entered all other information, you need to set a priority level to have the campaign considered a “contract” campaign. Here (4) we have set the priority level to 5. If you do not set the priority level and set a weight level then the ad package will be selling a remnant campaign.

Openx Contract Campaign Settings

After a client has enrolled, and completed payment a campaign will be created within OpenX, and the user referred to login, and upload banners or creatives.

The administrator, will see the contract created as above, however it will not show as a active campaign until the client actually uploads a banner. Make sure to click “show all” when viewing advertisers to ensure you can see the newly created campaigns that have not been activated yet.

Looking at the above image, you can see the information submitted into the new campaign by RevMax.
1) shows the ad package is selling adviews or cpm. This is reflected in
2) shows revenue as .50 . Making it fifty (.50)cents a thousand impressions, or cpm. (This package cost was $500.00. the original above was $250, making it .25 per thousand)
3)shows the priority level of 5 as selected and the daily limited impressions. 100,000 / 7 days = 14286
4) companion positioning was checked in the RevMax adpackage and is reflected here.

Warning this information may be outdated. Please see the forum for up to date RevMax help and instructions. http://www.openxpayments.com.

I see many purchase OpenX Plugin RevMax and never do get it fully integrated into their sites look and feel, perhaps leaving some potential advertising customers wondering if they are even at the same website they wish to advertise on.

I will try to express some simple methods here, hopefully in time I can post more.

First lets take a look at adding a advertising package to a php web page
by using php to pull the ad package information from the ox_RM_adpackages table.

First we need to include init.php and RevMax.functions so we know where we are at and make functions within RevMax available on the current web page.

//init tells us where we are at
require_once 'openx/init.php';
// nothing works without functions
require_once MAX_PATH . '/www/admin/plugins/RevMax/lib/RevMax.functions.php';

Next we need to define and make a connection to the OpenX database.

global $conn;
$config = $GLOBALS['_MAX']['CONF'];

Now we need to choose exactly what package and information we wish to list. The below example will return the first ad package set as a subscription from within RevMax, or produce an error as to why it couldn’t.

$sql = "SELECT * FROM `{$config['table']['prefix']}RM_packages` WHERE `selling`='Subscription' LIMIT 0, 1";
$res = mysql_query($sql, $conn) or die(mysql_error());
// by changing " WHERE `selling`='Subscription' LIMIT 0, 1"; "
// to WHERE `selling`='AdViews' LIMIT 0, 1";
// we can now list the first available AdViews package

We can now list that information on the web page.

<?php while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($res)) { ?>
          <td width="27%" colspan="3" align="center" style="border-style: none; border-width: medium" height="50">
         $<?php echo $row['packagename']; ?> $<?php echo $row['packagecost']; ?>
          </td> <?php } ?>
           <?php mysql_free_result($res); ?>

Using the same above call one can list packages depending on Subscription, AdViews, or AdClicks. Using that information you can then place a link with the current package information on any page
That pages package will always reflect the current package description and price within RevMax ad packages.

You can then link this information directly to the a slightly modified advertisers signup form such as this one. “moded-advertisers.php?packageid=4″
You will note that the advertiser sign up form displays this package (#4) on the form and does not offer alternatives. This method is extremely helpful when you have several sites you wish to sell advertising on independently and do not wish these packages to be available on the list on the advertisers signup screen or the clients reorder page. You can set a package as private in RevMax ad packages, and still list it elsewhere like above.
You can download the moded advertisers.php here , compare the original lines 434 to the new at line 421.

Banner uploads and self service payments

RevMax 4 for OpenX 2.8 gives the advertiser full control over purchasing new campaigns, uploading creatives, and reordering adviews or adclicks to be placed into their existing campaign. (purchase)

Advertiser information index

The first thing one notices inside the clients admin screens is a new Resources tab at the top right. Once clicked upon a user is taken to their account index page. Here the client has information relating to their account campaign and reorder purchases.

Advertiser Banner Upload screen

Here the advertiser can choose creatives and upload them into an existing campaign. From png to swf all files are recognized, uploaded and linked to the campaign the advertiser chooses.

Advertiser reorder AdViews (CPM) or AdClicks (CPM)

Once the admin has configured reorder ad packages within the RevMax ad packages screen, an advertiser can choose from adview or adclick packages to add to their existing campaign(‘s). This may allow a way for an advertiser to make a “test purchase” on sign up and if all is well then add larger amounts of adviews to their original campaign.

Advertiser Create New Campaigns

From the campaigns screen a advertiser can choose from admin defined advertising packages and purchase new campaigns at any time.

Advertiser Payment Pages

Once an advertiser has chosen a new campaign or campaign refill they can click to review their purchase information. From there they can click a link opening a new browser to the payment processor of their choice or admin configured. (purchase)

Creating Ad Packages in Openx 2.6 Using RevMax 3

This post assumes you have purchased and installed RevMax 3 for OpenX 2.6 .If not you can get more information and purchase it here.

Navigating to RevMax Ad Packages

Open a browser and log into your OpenX install and switch to Administrator.
Click the RevMax tab at the top right of screen.

Next click the Ad Packages tab to open the ad packages list screen. Here you can explorer already created packages, add a new advertising package, edit an existing one, or delete a no longer used one.

From the Ad Packages list screen click on “Add Package”. This will open the below screen to create your first advertising package within Openx.

Select accordingly from the drop down list.
b) Package Description: This will be shown on the drop down select list on the advertisers signup screen if made public later in settings. If you are selling 10,000 adviews as a leader board on domain.com then enter in something like 10,000 LeaderBoard Adviews at domain.com.
This field combined with the later discussed “make public” field is handy for creating ad packages across a network of sites.
c) Duration: Enter in here the amount of ad views, ad clicks or the actual time as in subscription. Example if selling 10,000 ad views enter 10000 notice no comma. If selling a subscription simply enter UNLIMITED, or 30 days etc.
d) Cost: Enter in here the amount you would like to collect using paypal for this ad package. Enter numbers like 100.00, do not enter in $ or other signs like “,”.
e) Auto Zone ID: Use this field if you would like to link an advertiser campaign to a specific publishers zone within OpenX. Notice the scrolling iframe to the right. Here you can scroll and find a zone id easily without clicking back and fourth through OpenX. The iframe list the zone id number (to be used) the zone description you have entered when creating the zone within OpenX, and the size of the created zone. This feature is extremely useful when selling ad space across a network of sites. For instance a package for domainb.comcom’s leader board can be easily linked here.
f) Auto Zone: Select yes or no to allow advertisers banner to be automatically attached to a specific zone. This is useful if you are renting a spot 160X600 on the index page and you have a zone created within openx for this. Create a package named 160X600 skyscraper etc, and link the package to this zone. the advertiser will not be able to show a banner unless it meets the zone requirements (160X600), as he has no permissions within OpenX to link banners to another zone.
g) Priority Level: You can choose to set a higher priority for paid campaigns here. Keep in mind that high priority campaigns will override any lower level campaigns that may already be active. A high setting number here may deactivate lower priority existing campaigns, once the advertiser or you have added a banner to the campaign.
h) Weight: If you chose to leave the priority setting at the default of “0″ above you can enter in a higher weight here if necessary. For example if your “house” campaigns are at a weight of 1 then a setting of 2 here will give this advertisers campaign a higher weight and more exposure, yet the house campaigns will still receive exposure.
g) Make Package Public: Here you can decide if you would like the created package to be shown on the advertisers sign up screen if using the included sign up form.

OpenAds paypal IPN signup and payment script

After using OpenAds/ phpadsnew to show our ads across our network for three years we decided we needed a simpler way to allow for revenue generation from this great open source script.

After several some what successful scripts we have come to understand the needs of a advertiser network and built in all the necessary functions to run a hands free network with little need for time consuming task.

  With three years of trials we came to agree on exactly what was needed for payment scripts to relieve the everyday work and take the hassle out of running an advertisers network. Although it’s still a (stable) work in progress, we made a list of the most time consuming task of using OpenAds and worked to eliminate them.

Enrolling publishers and
advertisers without admin interaction

Allowing for immediate
payment for ad clicks

Allowing advertisers to
upload and activate their own ads, campaigns

Allowing advertisers to
disable banners / ads

Banners disabled when ad
clicks are out

Advertiser support without
admin interaction.

With the ability to sign up independent publishers who agree to show ads on their web sites. You have more opportunity to increase ad view revenue. Not only will you be showing more ads, you have the ability to capitalize even more from their traffic. Lets say you charge .05 cents a click for advertisers, and you pay .025 cents or 2.5 cents a click. You will be making 2.5 cents for every click the publisher generates. That’s $25.00 you make off of every 1000 clicks a publisher generates. These are very conservative quotes compared to today’s online ad cost. Its not uncommon for an advertiser to pay .25 cents and more per click for qualified traffic. If you split
that with a publisher you will be making .12 cents a click or $120. per 1000 clicks a publisher generates.

  After several versions of our payment script and countless hours of hacking away at OpenAds scripts the same thing would eventually happen, it would fail every time we decided to upgrade the OpenAds scripts as our code was interlaced through out the OpenAds scripts. This soon became more hassle than it was worth. It was soon decided that in order for the scripts to survive all of our code needed to outside of and independent of OpenAds. With this release of our signup / payment scripts, all files except one are outside of the OpenAds scripting. The one that does survive can be uploaded again at any time after upgrading OpenAds and all functions continue as usual. (only suports openads 2)More information can be found in the help file (‘s).

If you do not have OpenAds it can be installed in many ways. if your web server has cPanel and fantastico you can click on fantastico in cPanel and look for OpenAds to install it on your domain automatically. If you do not have Openads 2.0. you can find it here.

  Once you have Openads 2.0. Installed its a simple process of uploading our files into the correct directories and setting your paypal IPN settings in the admin section of OpenAds. More information is available in the help file (‘s).
